EXPOSITORY (ENGLISH BIBLE)
35:17-28 Though the people of God are, and study to be, quiet, yet it has been common for their enemies to devise deceitful matters against them. David prays, My soul is in danger, Lord, rescue it; it belongs to thee the Father of spirits, therefore claim thine own; it is thine, save it! Lord, be not far from me, as if I were a stranger. He who exalted the once suffering Redeemer, will appear for all his people: the roaring lion shall not destroy their souls, any more than he could that of Christ, their Surety. They trust their souls in his hands, they are one with him by faith, are precious in his sight, and shall be rescued from destruction, that they may give thanks in heaven.Let them be ashamed ... - See the notes at Psalm 35:4.

That magnify themselves against me - Who seek to exalt themselves over me; to make themselves great by humbling and destroying me. They hope to rise on my ruin.

26. clothed—covered wholly (Job 8:22). As they gathered themselves together to deride and oppose me, so do thou gather them together to destroy them. Or, in like manner, one as well as another; let the proud and great ones of them be disappointed and ashamed as well as the meanest among them.

Themselves; the same ellipsis we have Psalm 38:16 55:12 Jeremiah 48:26. Or, their mouth, as it is expressed, Obadiah 1:12. So Ezekiel 35:13. That extol themselves and their power, and look upon me with scorn and contempt.

Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together,.... In a body, as one man; as they gathered together against him, Psalm 35:15; so he entreats they might together be brought to shame and confusion, they not being able to execute their designs; their schemes being broken, their counsels defeated, and they exposed to contempt;

that rejoice at mine hurt; the same with his adversity, or halting, Psalm 35:15;

let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me; let them be covered with it, as a man is with a garment; who magnified themselves, opened their mouths in great swelling words of vanity against him, vaunted and bragged over him, as in their power, and at their will.

Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion {t} together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed {u} with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me.

(t) That is, at once, were they never so many or mighty.

(u) This prayer will always be verified against them who persecute the faithful.

EXEGETICAL (ORIGINAL LANGUAGES)
26. A repetition of Psalm 35:4, with some variations, occurring again in Psalm 40:14.

Verse 26. - Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me (camp. ver. 4, of which this is an enlargement, with variations, the sentiment being exactly the same). Very similar maledictions will be found in Psalm 40:14; Psalm 70:2; Psalm 71:13; Psalm 109:29. Psalm 35:26On the metonymical use of נפשׁ, like τὸ ὀρεκτικόν for ὄρεξις, vid., Psychol. S. 203 tr. p. 239. The climax of desire is to swallow David up, i.e., to overpower him and clear him out of the way so that there is not a trace of him left. בּלּענוּהוּ with ע before נ, as in Psalm 132:6, and frequently; on the law of the vowels which applies to this, vid., Ewald, ֗60, a. שׂמחי רעתי is a short form of expression for רעתי שׂמחים (בּ) על. To put on shame and dishonour (Psalm 109:29, cf. Psalm 18), so that these entirely cover them, and their public external appearance corresponds with their innermost nature.
