EXPOSITORY (ENGLISH BIBLE)
20:27-38 It is common for those who design to undermine any truth of God, to load it with difficulties. But we wrong ourselves, and wrong the truth of Christ, when we form our notions of the world of spirits by this world of sense. There are more worlds than one; a present visible world, and a future unseen world; and let every one compare this world and that world, and give the preference in his thoughts and cares to that which deserves them. Believers shall obtain the resurrection from the dead, that is the blessed resurrection. What shall be the happy state of the inhabitants of that world, we cannot express or conceive,See this explained in the Matthew 22:15-33 notes, and Mark 12:13-27 notes. 27-34. no resurrection—"nor angel nor spirit" (Ac 23:8); the materialists of the day. See Poole on "Luke 20:27"

And the third took her,.... To wife, by virtue of the same law:

and in like manner the seven also; the other four, one after another, when all seven married her:

and they left no children, and died; or they died, leaving no children behind them.

And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.
EXEGETICAL (ORIGINAL LANGUAGES)
Luke 20:31. οὐ κατέλιπον τ. κ. ἀπέθανον, did not leave children and died, for died leaving no children. The emphasis is on the childlessness, therefore it is mentioned first. That the seven died in course of time was a matter of course, but that seven in succession should have no children was marvellous.

31. whose wife?] The forcible order of B, L is “the woman, therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become of the seven?”

for seven
] Rather, for the seven.

Luke 20:31. Καὶ οἱ ἑπτὰ, the seven also) that is to say, the rest of the seven.
